Hi all,

I've got a problem booting up my pc (Windows XP SP3) & the error message is ntoskrnl.exe missing/corrupted. I didn't do anything major like installing a new hardware/software to my pc before it came up with this ntoskrnl error. I've followed the steps shown on the youtube - How To Fix: Missing or Corrupt ntoskrnl.exe File by Britec09 but I can't seem to get anything on the Windows recovery console - see the errors below:

At recovery console --->

C:\>cd windows
It showed:
The path or file specified is not valid

C:\>dir
It showed:
Directory of C:\
An error occurred during directory enumeration

I've also tried to connect the hdd on a USB external casing on both my new laptop (windows 7) & old (Windows Xp SP2) & both machines recognised/detected it as a USB storage device (drive E) but when I tried to access to it I got this error message - you need to format the disk in drive E: before you can use it. For your info I've used this hdd as an external hdd whenever I'm away travelling & it always works (just need to change the jumper setting).

I really need to recover at least the important data in my hdd but if it can be repaired & booted up on my pc then that's even better!

Any advice on this problem is welcomed & appreciated.

Thanks!

 Azn ruudolph

welcome to the forum

These are what cause your problem

Issue:

NTOSKRNL.EXE is missing or corrupt.

Related errors:

Below is a listing of the full error message that may be related to this error.

Windows NT could not start because the below file is missing or corrupt:

C:\Winnt\System32\Ntoskrnl.exe

Cause:

   1. Keyboard issue
   2. Miscellaneous corruption
   3. Corrupt boot.ini file.
   4. Missing boot.ini file.
   5. Missing or corrupt ntoskrnl.exe file.
   6. Windows NT installed on a partition bigger then 7.8GB
   7. Corrupted hard disk drive or severely corrupted Windows.

Solution:

important:
Before trying any of the below recommendations it's recommend that you attempt to load the last known good configuration.

Keyboard issue

This issue has also been known to be caused by a short in the ground wire in the keyboard cable. Make sure this is not the cause of your error by replacing the keyboard with a different keyboard or simply just disconnecting the keyboard from the computer.

Missing or corrupt ntoskrnl.exe file

If the ntoskrnl.exe file is corrupt or missing this can also generate the error. To restore this file follow the below steps.

   1. Insert the Microsoft Windows XP CD. Note: If you have a recovery CD or a restore CD and not a Microsoft Windows XP CD it is likely the below steps will not resolve your issue.
   2. Reboot the computer, as the computer is starting you should see a message to press any key to boot from the CD. When you see this message press any key.
   3. In the Microsoft Windows XP setup menu press the R key to enter the recovery console.
   4. Select the operating system you wish to fix, and then enter the administrator password.
   5. Type expand d:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ c:\windows\system32
   6. You will then be prompted if you wish to overwrite the file type Y and press enter to overwrite the file.
   7. Type exit to reboot the computer.

Corrupted hard disk drive or severely corrupted Windows

Attempt to check the hard disk drive for any errors by running the chkdsk program. To do this follow the below steps.

   5. Once at the recovery console type chkdsk /r
   6. Once completed type exit and see if issue is resolved.

Missing boot.ini file

Microsoft Windows XP users:

If the boot.ini is severely corrupted or missing a user running Microsoft Windows XP can rebuild the boot.ini to resolve this issue.

How to rebuild the Windows boot.ini

   1. Insert the Microsoft Windows XP CD into the computer. Note: If you have a system recovery CD or restore CD (not a Microsoft CD) these steps will likely not work for your computer.
   2. Reboot the computer with the CD and press any key when prompted to press any key to boot from the CD.
   3. Once in the Microsoft Setup menu press R to open the recovery console.
   4. Select the operating system you wish to use; if you only have Windows XP on the computer you will only have one prompt.
   5. Once prompted for the password enter the Admin password and press enter.
   6. Once at the command prompt type bootcfg /rebuild to start the rebuild process.
   7. The rebuild process will step you through a number of steps depending upon how many operating systems you have on the computer and how the computer is setup. Below is a listing of the common steps you are likely going to encounter.

      * Prompt for the identified versions of Windows installed. When you receive this prompt press Y if the bootcfg command properly identified each of the Windows operating systems installed on the computer. It is important to realize this command will only detect Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows NT installations.

      * Prompt to enter the load identifier. This is the name of the operating system for the boot.ini. For example, Microsoft Windows XP Home users would enter Microsoft Windows XP Home edition.

      * Prompt to Enter OS load options. When this prompt is received type /fastdetect to automatically detect the available options.

   8. Once you have completed all the available options in the rebuild and are back at the prompt type exit to reboot the computer.

Hi Britec

Thanks for the prompt reply.

I've tried some of the recommended solutions.

1. I unplugged the keyboard but it didn't solve the problem.

2. I tried the expand d:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ c:\windows\system32 method & I got this error message: the command is not recognised.

3. I tried the bootcfg /rebuild method & I got this error message: failed to successfully scan disk for windows installation.....

4. I tried chkdsk (without the /r) & volume appears to be in good condition.

I haven't tried the chkdsk /r as I'm worried that it will do more damage to my hdd. The last time I used chkdsk /r it destroyed my data (the hdd then was having a similar problem - can't boot up). I haven't got the access to the important files & the backup on those files may be incomplete/not up to date.

Any other suggestions?

Ok found this expand d:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ c:\Windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe while googling & the error message I got is: access is denied.

I think recovering of my important files is the priority now. Anybody knows of any tried & tested recovery software or is it recommended to send my hdd to a recovery specialists or something?

Thanks

Hey thanks for the free software. I will test the TestDisk as it is what I'm looking for, to recover my data/files from the inaccessible hdd.
I've tried using the hdd as slave & also as an external hdd but the error message is the same: you need to format the disk in drive E: before you can use it.

Any other suggestion is welcome.

Thanks!
