Hi. My system crashed yesterday evening while I was watching a streaming video and downloading a cracked game. I had been downloading a couple of games over the last weeks. Anyway I was getting the hal.dll error message and have been attempting a number of solution unfortunately to no success. I've followed the video you've posted to youtube. I've attempted the solution in reverse order. I've attempted a repair installation. I performed chkdisc and recieved an error. I removed my battery from the MB and I attempted to clear my CMOS(I don't know if I was sucessful). I don't have a back-up my important files. I don't know how to do that. I don't know if this is important but in order to use my windows cd  and effect the changes you've suggested. I must remove my hard drive from the bios and change the boot order. If I don't, even if I change the boot order I can't boot from the windows cd and I get the hal.dll error message.

I need some help. I don't know what to do next. And my computer is my only form of entertainment as I don't own a television or xbox. I'm not exactly confident with these repairs so please make your advice as detailed and specific as you can. I won't be offended if I need a utility tell me exactly where to get it and how to use it. Thank-you for the help. Wade.

Ok lets just get your info off your drive first.
dowload UBCD
http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/
mount it to a disk ( if you do now know how to do this ask)
when you boot to it you will get this menu

select parted magic the 8th one down.
this will load up a little interface were you will be able to plug in a memory stick and back up your important info.

Ok now to do with the computer. If you could read this
http://www.briteccomputers.co.uk/forum/windows-xp-support/please-read-before-posting-745/
and post more detials about your problem please.

Thank-you for responding to my post. I've started the process of creating the boot disk you suggested. But I'm a little perplexed in regards to your wanting more details about my problem. Please let me know what kind of specifics you need. Do you need the model numbers of my computer components, or the name of the game which I recently downloaded? The only thing which I can think of is that a couple of days ago while I was watching internet TV and downloading a cracked game my system crashed(It had crashed a day or two earlier but afterwards everything seemed fine). And when I rebooted my system I would get a "Windows could not start because of the following file is missing or corrupt <windows root> \system32\hal.dll Please re-install copy of the above file." When I start my computer I don't recieve an error during the POST test. I get a screen which has a memory test and displays my harddrive(although the name of drive that is given seems different from what it actually is) ,dvd-rom and dvd-writer. Then a list of system components is displayed. Then it says booting from cd twice in a row. The screen goes black and then the error message is displayed. Thanks again for your assistance and please let me know  what other information you might need to solve this problem. Wade

I got this problem a couple of years ago, i booted from the xp cd into the recovery console, then into command prompt and typed the following command to copy the hal.ddl file from the cd to the hard drive, (D) assumes your cd drive is "d" and (C) assumes your windows installation is on "c" so you can change those to whatever it is on your system.

expand d:\i386\hal.dl_ c:\windows\system32

It asks you for permission to overwrite the file, press Y and then enter, then type exit.
Remove the cd from the drive and reboot and hopefully you can boot back into windows.
From what i remember, there can be lots of reasons for the error you got, including the boot.ini file, hopefully the command will work but if it doesn't, let us know and we'll find something else to get it fixed.

Hello all,

Got a similar problem on my XP media centre edition, BUT to top it all, when I go into the recovery console, I should get typically get 1) windows installation to jump into, BUT, i dont get that, just a c: by itself - strange. I carry on and run chkdsk, repair whatever it maybe, and go thru with bootcfg /rebuild.. and the damn thing says access denied. The 'access denied' message also turns up when I try to expand a new hal.dll file onto the c drive from the cd!..

I'm having real  difficulties getting pass this access denied issue, and getting this sorted!... pls pls help. I do not wish to format the drive. got info on there, I would like back.

Also I heard one can install windows 7, without losing my documents/files, is this true?.. if so, I might just say sod it to the above, and get W7 on it.

replies would be hugely appreciated.. Cheers peeps..  Huh?
