Hello. I too have gotten the message "missing or corrupt Windows root\system32\hal.dll. Please reinstall a copy of the above file." Now I have already tried the method's posted on this site and youtube. When I insert the Installation disk and hit "r" to repair, I do not get the option of picking the C drive. Instead I get the following: "1: H:\MiniNT" and "2: H:\1386." I am confused because I know for a fact that my system operates on C. I have tried to replace C with H and follow your instructions but I get messages like "File not found in specified folder" and "The Parameter is not valid."
I do not know where to go from here.

I have also tried to repair Windows by using the latest thread and have Windows repair itself.  After I agree to the license agreement, and press ENTER, the next page looks diffrent from yours. On mine it says that all of my applications and documents WILL BE ERASED!!! I don't understand why this is happening.

Also another question. If I were to completely reinstall XP over again, is there any way to retrieve all my Documents??? I don't mind if my applications get deleted, however I do need my documents. I run a 24 ghz proccesor, and 1 gb ram. Thank you for the help.

I also forgot to mention that I recently used Deamon Tools to mount an ISO image. Could this have anything to do with my problem??? I do not remember what drive I mounted it in.

I think the best thing for you to do is load up a preinstalled enviroment cd and see if you can see you data. if you can then you can back it up.

if you dont have these already made then you can use puppy linux boot to that and your see you hard drive. mount that drive by double clicking on it and your see your data I hope.
