This is about the system32/drivers/isapnp.sys problem when i start the computer but,
When i start the computer from the CD-ROM it comes to a screen about partitions and unpartitioned space on the computer. It doesn't come to the screen where it says to press "r" for repair. I have to pick an option at the bottom. Which one should i pick?

55797 MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on atapi [MBR]
unpartitioned                                                                           space 47 MB
C: Partition1 [NTFS]                                                     38139 MB ( 29207 MB free )
Unpartitioned                                                                             space 8 MB
D: Partition2 (Backup) [NTFS]                                                        12739 MB ( 11618 MB free )
Unpartitioned space

It has a box around that ^^^ and i have to pick one? and it has 3 options on the bottom too ENTER=Install, C=Create Partition, F3=Quit
Help?

Symptoms

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\windows\System32\Drivers\Isapnp.sys

Cause

This issue may occur if the Isapnp.sys file is damaged or is not present in the path that the error message specifies.

Resolution
To resolve this issue, use Recovery Console to replace the Isapnp.sys file.

To replace the Isapnp.sys file in Windows XP, follow these steps:

   1. Start the computer from the Windows XP CD-ROM.
   2. At the Welcome to Setup screen, press R to start Recovery Console.
   3. If you have a dual-boot or a multiple-boot computer, type the number that corresponds to your Windows XP installation when you are prompted to select the Windows installation to log on to, and then press ENTER.

   4. When you are prompted for the Administrator password, type the password, and then press ENTER.

Note If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.

   5. At the C:\Windows prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:

      ren c:\windows\system32\drivers\isapnp.sys isapnp.old

Note The steps in this article assume that you installed Windows XP to the C: drive. The actual location of your Windows installation may vary.

   6. At the C:\Windows prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
      expand cd-romdrive:\i386\isapnp.sy_ c:\windows\system32\drivers\isapnp.sys
      For example, type:
      expand d:\i386\isapnp.sy_ c:\windows\system32\drivers

   7. After the file is successfully expanded, type exit, and then press ENTER to exit Recovery Console.
   8. Restart the computer.

Hi there,

After reading through your posts, I notice that in the first one you tell us that the Installation CD that you have is just a normal CD-R with Windows XP Professional written on it. This seems to me to be a copy of an OEM Recovery Disc that was supplied with the PC when new or one made following the instructions that came with the PC's documentation. A lot of these OEM disc's do not include the option to carry out a repair using the Recovery Console, if so then this will be the reason why you are not been given the option to select R for the Recovery Console when you boot from that CD.

On the screen that you are getting, DO NOT select ENTER if the C Partition is highlighted, use F3 to Quit instead otherwise you will be starting off a Fresh Install of the Operating System in the course of which all of your Data will be wiped off the Hard Drive and you will not want to do that.

I would suggest that you get hold of a genuine Microsoft XP OS installation disc, maybe a friend can loan you their copy? If you do get hold of this disc then just follow all of the advice that Brian has given you already and you will be up and running in no time.

Let us know how you get on.

Cheers, HTH,
