Win XP, OEM version SP 1.  Computer was in the midst of an automated Microsoft update.  ISP server went down, and computer was left on the screen that says "do not turn off your computer, updating file...." for over 24 hours.  Finally just turned machine off.  Now when turning it back on it reboots, no error messages, goes to screen that says "your computer did not shut down properly the last time - make selection".  No matter what you choose (safe mode, safe mode with networking, last known good config or start windows normally) it reboots itself right back to that screen.

Steps I have taken:  Can get into recovery module with Win XP disk, but only takes me to C: prompt.  Not sure what to do from there.  Tried to run restore command from C: prompt (C:\Windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe) but gives error command not recognized.

Have UBCD4Win disk (the one for XP did not work, the one for Vista/7 will allow it to boot).  can boot via this disk.  Unable to install SP3 update as it defaults to virtual drive & will not allow me to choose different destination.  I tried to update registry via regedit, but requires reboot and then defaults back to drive "X" to install, which does not have enough space for installation files.  Also not recognizing USB ports to back up to external drive.

Watched video of how to fix computer via copying files from restore folder - (copying and renaming default, sam, security, system, software).  Old files deleted, new files (from restore folder 2 days prior to problem) copied to config folder - still returns to the "windows did not shut down properly" screen.     Unsure of what to try next.

Additional info - tried the FixMBR command, continued to reboot itself.  Tried the steps at http://tech.icrontic.com/articles/repair_windows_xp/, continued to reboot itself.

In the midst of all of this, hit some key that allowed me an option of "turn off automatic reboot" which I did.  I then rebooted, got a blue screen that gives the following error:

A problem has been detected & Windows has been shut down.......
Technical Info:  STOP: 0x0000007F (0x0000000D, 0x00000000, 0x00000000,
0x00000000)

I See a lot of info on the web in regards to various reasons for this error,
but none seem to apply to this situation.  Any suggestions appreciated.

Blue Screen of Death leaves minidump files in C:\Windows\MiniDump you can boot to a preinstalled enviroment to save these files and read them with bluescreenview or upload them to http://www.mediafire.com/ and I can take alook at them for you. But if you dont know how to load into a preinstalled enviroment... not to worry.

Please let us know if you can do this.
