Good day all,

I have a Win xp pro that was giving different bod messages and another repair tech stated it was fixed, now when I try and boot up the cpu we are getting a  system32 drivers\pci.sys error.... tried to load the ubd4win. but the cd carraige keeps opening up and will not load the cd.  It keeps reverting back to the black screen with the system32 drivers\pci.sys error message...

Any help on which program to try would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks,

Michael

Recovering File is missing or corrupt: C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Pci.sys. in Recovery Console

If you don't have a Windows XP Home, Pro or MCE installation CD, don't worry, you can use the recovery console iso below.

Download the following and create a bootable CD from the .iso file: XP Recovery Console

Note: that you don't burn the iso file itself to CD, you create a CD from the iso file using your CD burning software.
If you don't have any CD burning software installed, you can use imgburn

Steps to perform on the problem machine:

1. Place your Windows XP Installation CD or the new Recovery Console disk you just created into your CD or DVD ROM drive, and reboot.

You should see this:

If you don't see the above, try pressing the F10 or F12 keys during boot and selecting the CDRom device from the list.
If that doesn't work?, enter BIOS Setup by pressing the F1, F2, F10 or Del key during boot and modifying the
Boot Order or Boot Priority to make the CD/DVD first boot device.

2. Press any key to start Windows Setup (Don't worry.. we're not actually using setup at this point)

3. Wait a while for setup to start, until you see the following screen, then press the R key.

4. Wait until you see this screen, and enter the number of your main installation. (Typically 1 for C:\Windows)

5. Press Enter.

6. If prompted to do so, enter your Administrator password. If you don't have one, leave it blank and press enter.

7. Enter MAP to determine the drive letter assigned to the CD-ROM.

8. From the command prompt, enter: Expand x:>\i386\pci.sy_ c:\Windows\System32\drivers /y. (note x: is my windows cd drive yours may be different)

You should receive a message that says:
pci.sys

1 file(s) expanded.

9. Remove the CD/DVD then reboot. Windows should now begin loading.

 Azn Brian,

WOW!!!  THANKS FOR SUCH A FAST RESPONSE!!!

I read this post before posting, however, each time I put the disk in the drive, it spits it out?Huh?  The one time it stayed, it continues to bypass the cdrom and boot up to the error... changed the boot up sequence to boot to cd, but still no luck..

Any Suggestions.

Thanks,

Michael

Michael you could use a preinstalled environment and drop the file in that way if you are having trouble booting from cd.

puppy linux, ubcd4win, windows live cd any of these will do the trick.

Also you might be able to do a rollback

Hey Brian,

I re-read your post several times so hopefully I didnt miss anything..  I cant seem to use the cd rom... it keeps spitting out the disk once the computer starts up.. then it goes to the error message..  Did I miss something...  I can put the drive in an enclosure and see everything off another computer, but I dont know how to repair or if I can repair in this manner.. I doubt it..

So, my question is what to do if the cd rom drive is acting up as well..

Thanks again,

Michael

ok put the drive in an enclosure and then follow the tutorial above..but change the path or drag and drop the file into that location, just remember to rename the pci.sy_ to pci.sys

Brian,

Yes that is correct...

I typically dont do this type of work but thankfully I am learning from your site and you!!!  My clients are insisting I fix these types of problems because they trust me and my work...  That being said... I lose a lot on these jobs, because I cant charge them when I am learning on their dime..

Anyway... Yes that is where I am at, at this point..

Thanks,

Michael

Good day Brian,

Ok after several attempts, I was able to get the password, corrected the corrupted file, but now I am getting more error messages that the system32\drivers\ntfs is missing.. before that it was system32\drivers\isapnp.sys that was missing... so... I think it is the entire drivers file that is missing... is there an easier way of loading this file using your method describe above with the use of the recovery console using the i386??

Thanks again for all of your help..

Michael

Fix File is missing or corrupt: C:\Windows\system32\drivers\ntfs in Recovery Console

8. From the command prompt, enter:
cd \windows\system32\drivers

ren ntfs.sys ntfs.old

Note This step renames the corrupted Ntfs.sys file to Ntfs.old. If the Ntfs.sys file is not found, the file is missing.

9. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:

copy cd:\i386\ntfs.sys drive:\windows\system32\drivers (Where cd is the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive that contains the Windows XP CD, and drive is the drive where you installed Windows XP.)

10. Remove the CD/DVD then reboot. Windows should now begin loading.
