Clean install of Windows 8.1 on Lenovo
#1
Exclamation
Hi, I am trying to do a clean install of windows 8.1 on a Lenove b50-30 with a new hard drive, I have done this many times on lots of laptops with no problems at all, on this laptop, I get asked for a product key.
The laptop cam with windows 8.1 core pre installed and I am using the 8.1 oem disc.
I have tested on another b50-30 and get the exact same problem, I have also tested on a b50-70 and it works.
Huh
Has anyone ever had this?
I have tryed extracting the key from the BIOS and entering it but it didn't work, just FYI, on the working b50-70 I extracted the BIOS key with msdn and it was different from the windows key using magic jelly bean.
I have done the key with jelly bean in the past fine but the hard drive is dead on this laptop so that is not an option
I've tryed lots of BIOS settings like secure boot, legacy, compatibility etc with no joy
I tryed cloning the other lenovo drive but it wont activate, (may have copied windows key from working laptop)
I tryed installing with generic key then removing key and entering BIOS key and that failed
I also called microsoft with the BIOS product key and they said it was for 8.1 core
Confused

HEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLP!

I did try that, I even tried pro,N etc, one thing I did notice is that the windows 8 sticker on the bottom was a picture of a window without the bars that cross in the middle, I have never seen that before

I'd give Lenovo a call..

How to download Windows 8.1  (For a OEM computer with UEFI firmware BIOS with a embedded Windows 8/8.1 product key.)

Note: Make sure you download the correct version of Windows 8.1.
Note: Make sure the version matches your UEFI firmware (BIOS) embedded Windows 8/8.1 product key.

How to clean install Windows 8.1  or (full guide with pictures)

1. Start by Creating windows installation media for Windows 8.1
  • USB flash drive and DVD can be booted in both UEFI and Legacy BIOS boot mode.
  • USB flash drive and DVD 64-bit windows installation media are compatible with Secure Boot.
  • Normally, you do not need to change the UEFI firmware (BIOS) settings, for example, the boot order of drives, enable Legacy BIOS boot mode, enable Compatibility Support Module (CSM), or disable Secure Boot.

  • Connect your USB flash drive or Insert your DVD.
  • Shut down your laptop.
  • Press the NOVO button. The system loads boot options.
  • Select the BOOT MENU option.
  • Select your USB/DVD from the boot menu.

Thanks for the help, but this did not solve the problem, I was ok with installing but I was getting asked for a product key, I tried all versions of windows 8.0 and 8.1 with not luck Sad

I called microsoft and go no help, usual fobbing off

HOWEVER! the answer to my question is WINDOWS 8.1 WITH BING

its designed for low end machines as the manufacture gets it for free and has to leave the default browser as IE with bing as the default search engine, I hope this can help someone out.

Got to be the wrong disc, it should automatically activate on installation.
Maybe try and get a proper Lenovo recovery disc
