HI,

I have cured many laptop overheating issues by doing the following:

1. Disassembled laptop
2. Cleaned entirely with compressed air.
3. Replaced fan.
4. Replaced Thermal compound (arctic silver 5)
5. Added copper shims to CPU and Video chips.
6.Reduced "Maximum processor state"
7. Even drilled holes in bottom of laptop to let more air in.

This has solved laptop overheating issues 99.9% of the time..

The overheating issues are well known with the HP dv2-dv7 series, as is the class action law suit against them...
I have an HP Pavilion DV7 which I have done all the above to and its still overheating!
Anyone have any useful recommendations of some magical aid besides a cooling pad, external fan etc Dodgy

I spoke to the fan seller, they agreed that the fan may be a lemon and are sending a new one.
(you certainly cant see or hear that it is bad) but I will update after next fan is installed.

A good way to confirm a bad fan would be to go straight into the BIOS when you power the laptop on. Let the computer sit at the BIOS for some time. You should hear the fan ramp up and then feel for the airflow coming out of the exhaust vent. When you are in the BIOS your cpu is tacked at 100% and the fans should be spinning up to compensate for the heat.

So Tim, if the fan inst working hard at the Bios its considered bad? And around how long would you wait?

The fan should spin up at least a couple of minutes after you enter the bios. Just wait and see if it spins.

Question: What is the laptop doing for you to diagnose it as a overheating problem?

Shutting down, usually when the video chip was being stressed by playing YouTube.

Yeah that sounds like overheating. Do you even notice if the fan is even spinning at any point when the laptop is on?

The new fan does work/spin it just seems a bit weak.

As stated the DV7 series are well known fro over heating issues. I would bail out on that particular job.
