I'm not a fan of cooling pads as I've never found them to work well enough but each to their own. Also it doesn't really work if the airflow is from the side and not underneath.

Yeah I know what you mean GS. Trouble is people us a laptop as a replacement for there desktop and use it for long hours which can cause a lot of problems. They was never really meant to replace desktop computers. People just don't use a laptop in the correct way.

They use the laptop while sitting on the bed? I wonder why its overheating hmm. They never get a laptop service or maintenance? its still a computer like a desktop and need to be maintained in same way. Remove dust, re-apply thermal compound etc etc. I would say even more so with a laptop, because of the restricted space inside. My policy on laptops have always been the same. I won't spend loads of money on them, buy a reasonably priced laptop in sale and use it until I have a major problem like motherboard issue and get rid and buy new.

In my opinion, its not worth repairing a £300 to £400 pound laptop that is 4 years old. If its a keyboard or power adapter, something silly like that, then yeah repair.

A lot of laptops have a very poor design and crap cooling and they wonder why the have overheating issue.

Yep. I recently had to tell a customer their lappie mobo was dead, they said "but its only 5years old".
After which they explained to me that that switched it on in the morning and left it on all day even when they went out....., No wonder it died!

I think the need for coolers are less now due to the fact that current mobile processors run much cooler.
