My computer shut down while installing windows update, will that be a problem in the long or short term?

you need to be more specific about how/why your computer shutdown...
Some updates require the system to shutdown or reboot to install the update.
If you mean Windows was installing updates and you shutdown your computer, that's not a problem, worse case scenario will be that it will show as 'failed' in the updates section. The update will try to be installed again next time.
If you lost power during the update (power outage) then yes, you could have some problems! (Which you may be lucky enough to fix with a system restore. It all depends.
Did you try starting your computer again? Was there any problems?
Remember! You should exercise complete CTRL and you ALT to think carefully before you DELete stuff willy nilly.

sometime's it will revert back the update automatically
what did it say when you turn on the computer ?
