You can do it if you choose but you won't have the same speed and performance as the PC2-6400.

Just make sure they are equal amounts of RAM i.e, 2 x 4GB or 8GB or 1GB etc.

Ahh ok, the main reason im doing the switch is because the dx7300 was refurbished and i noticed not all of the ram sticks were the exact same but as for the dell it it had 4 ram sticks of the same and i haven't been using it so traded 2 for 4 basically well thank you all for your help and dont forget bastards are bastards hahaha your awesome guilty spark

You could've used the 4 sticks of RAM if they were all the same Gig as your MOBO is Dual Channel so 4 slots equals 2 slots running as one and the other two running as one but both being of equal amounts i.e,

Slot1 Slot2 Slot3 Slot4

2GB 2GB 2GB 2GB

This gives you an even speed variance, if any were of different speed all RAM would be downgraded to work at its lowest RAM size.

For example:

Slot1 Slot2 Slot3 Slot4

2GB 2GB 64MB 2GB

In this set up all RAM would run at 64MB and your system would probably crash unless running XP or Linux.

Oh alright, since i have 4 sticks of the same ram and are all 512mb a piece than i should be good to go then

1. Would having two 1gb sticks of ram mixed with 512mb memory sticks hurt performance with the dell dimension 8400?

2. Lets say i mixed 4 ram sticks that were 1gb a piece but the ram was mixed with buffered and unbuffered, would the system info in the bios tell me that the ram sticks were different types or would it say that all the ram sticks were unbuffered?

I would only use unbuffered 8400 probably only support that
