Critical error, Your start menu isn't working
#1
This is a new on on me, the (mine this time ) computer was working ok about and hour ago, I went out for a walk with the Mrs and when I got home I decided to logon, only now to find I'm stuck with this error that I cant LEFT click the start menu.
I can right click the menu ok.

Windows 10 home 64bit 12g ram. Loaded programs at start are
Dropbox - Kaspersky Internet security -Sticky Password - Internet download manager - CCleaner - Malwarebytes - Nvidia Geforce Experience.

Mr Microsoft is aware of this issue and tried the safe mode option. I haven't created a new user as yet as I would really like to fix this one.

I'm trying to fly like and eagle but this fat windows turkey is stopping me Sad

Thanks for any help.

Some reason system restore had been turned off so i cant go back.. grrrr.

To resolve these errors:

Critical Error
Start menu and Cortana aren’t working. We’ll try to fix it the next time you sign in.

Critical Error
Your start menu is damaged. We will try to fix it on start up.

Your Start Menu isn't working. We'll try to fix it the next time you sign in.

You can try this, open Powershell as administrator and re-register Start Menu in Windows 10 (if you can't do this at desktop, try it from safemode)

Code:
Get-appxpackage -all *shellexperience* -packagetype bundle |% {add-appxpackage -register -disabledevelopmentmode ($_.installlocation + “\appxmetadata\appxbundlemanifest.xml”)}

  • Create a new user account and copy all your data across
  • Do a refresh of the system and keep data and programs.
  • Run sfc /scannow
  • Run chkdsk /f

Wow i'm about ready to format this machine...
ok, here goes.
1) Cannot create a new user, no option pops up to add anyone, even safe mode.
2) SFC /SCANNOW - apparently there is a system repair due and to restart the computer, nothing happens when I reboot.
3) I do a hard drive check, no errors found.
4) Tried the Powershell thing in Admin mode, nothing happens.
5) not only the start menu not work, clicking anything down near the clock no window pops up, like the action window.

Starting to gather files and backing up data ready for format... need to grab the win 10 code from registry too. I hope that works.
I have the win10 64 bit installer on usb ready.
umm umm what else do i need..

This was what I ended up doing.
I enabled the admin.
That set up the admin account no worries, the start menu worked fine.
The real issue I had from then on was when I went to the users panel to create a new user... the pop up window after you click add someone else to this PC did not show so I could not do this.

So, in the end I decided to back up what I could and start again. When I went to re-install win10, windows along the way created several partitions, like upgrading from windows 8, there was like 4 partitions, so I deleted them all and started again.

That created a new issue for me..... Your gonna fall off ya chair laughing...
There was a 5th partition, that was the back up drive... yep you guessed it that got scrubbed as well. So all my back up stuff went bye bye too. I must have been on another planet while I was happily deleting partitions....

i think start menu has critical error probably caused by dropbox and onedrive installed at a time

f23948 I has seen people say this about dropbox and onedrive, not sure that is the answer to everyone's problems if any. But I guess its worth uninstalling and re-installing them to try. Its probably a temporary fix, just like restarting in safemode an rebooting.

Mobis looks like data recovery is in order. bloody hate when shit like that happens.
