XP Internet Connection problem
#1
I’ve just reformatted and reinstalled XP on my non-primary computer. (It was working just fine but very slowly…time for a reformat)

Everything seems normal except I’m apparently not able to connect to the Internet. I know the Ethernet connection is good because I am using the cable of my wife’s computer.

I followed instructions on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zk8gtJeHztE , Repair / Reset Winsock / Internet Protocol TCP IP Settings by Britec and successfully reset Winsock, and restarted the computer.

Still get a “The page cannot be displayed” message.

What can I do next?

re install your Ethernet driver

One of the wonderful things about reformatting a computer is that you can do anything without worry that you’ll lose everything.

Found drivers disk/inserted and ran

Same problem (I think)

IE/”The page cannot be displayed”

What next?

Also:
1) I went to the device manager and noticed that all the “Other devices” [Ethernet Controller, PCI device, SM Bus Controller, Video Controller (VGA compatible)] had question marks next to them.
2) Ethernet Controller/General [Reinstall driver…] Tried this with both the Installation disk and the Drivers and Utilities disk. Computer could not find appropriate driver on either disk and asked if I wanted to “Connect and search for the software on the Internet”

Of course I could not do that.

What now?

Inside IE browser select the cog icon and (bare with me I haven't used IE since IE7 days) choose either the security tab or the connections tab (along the top), you should see a list of check boxes. Its under Advanced Tab

Scroll down to find the check box of Protocols 1.0 / 1.1 / 2.0 / 3.0

Deselect 3.0 and make sure 1.0 / 1.1 / 2.0 are selected.

For someone who hasn’t used IE for a while (I don’t know why I bother, but for now it’s all that’s available on this just reformatted computer) you do a spectacular job of remembering (and stream consciousing):

Under Tools/Internet options…/Advanced {tab}/Security there were three related checkboxes:
Use SSL 2.0 (checked)
Use SSL 3.0 (checked)
Use TLS 1.0 (unchecked)

I changed it to:
Use SSL 2.0 (checked)
Use SSL 3.0 (unchecked)
Use TLS 1.0 (checked)

Restarted IE
Restarted computer

But alas, it makes no difference and the problem persists…

Either you are installing the drivers incorrectly or you are not installing the correct drivers.

Any suggestions how I might be installing drivers incorrectly?
Obviously, it's the program that's doing the installation. So it has to be blamed for "not installing the correct drivers".

How can I go further?
