Data migration after Windows install
#1
If I followed your video as to migrating data by removing all drivers first etc.Could I migrate or drag and drop game files to a fresh Windows 7 install on my Samsung SSD from this hard drive (Seagate barracuda).without corrupting something?Since I live in a rural area my ISP SUCKS backside. My speed is 10 meg....I feel like a dinosaur.I would really rather not re-download all the Steam,Diablo,Starcraft 2, and Origin files and their updates from the last 2 years.I know absolutely less than nothing about this stuff so.....I appreciate your patience.I just play games. Thanks again.

You can backup and restore steam games if you wish

Uh.....I don't think I asked the right question.I am thinking about installing a fresh Windows 7 to my new Samsung SSD.The hard drive that all my games are on is this one.I am putting this HD and the rest of the hardware in this computer in my old XP tower. Is it possible to transfer the files on this HD to my new one AFTER the new Windows 7 install?I know about the Steam backup but you have to save the files to your current drive unless both are setup together.I was going to leave this drive out of the new build and run the SSD exclusively.I hope that all makes sense.Being Autistic isn't all it's cracked up to be. The only way you can copy everything including your programs from Windows XP to Windows 7 is a program called PC Mover

Another way is to use Microsoft Easy Transfer For Windows XP

I am definitely NOT communicating.I have an Alienware P2 case(the one I am using now).I have gutted my old XP tower....it is empty except for new PS.I have purchased hardware to put into my Alienware case.I am removing the parts that are in it now(these)and putting them in my old tower to make a backup PC.The hard drive etc out of the XP tower will be kept in a box somewhere.THIS hard drive will be going into THAT tower with all of THESE parts. The new parts that are going into THIS case include the Samsung SSD I mentioned. The shop is installing a fresh Win7 OS in THAT SSD.Unless I can migrate THESE files to SSD)

I am wondering if it is possible to move the Game files(separate from the Win 7 OS) and everything I want to keep from THIS hard drive(Windows 7 with all current updates)to the new hard drive(the SSD)and what the procedure would be to do that.Could I migrate THESE files that are not part of the Windows OS(game files, saves,DLC etc) to the new SSD without trying a new COMPLETE OS and file cloning using the knowledge from your video?

In other words.....can I migrate or copy my game files etc without installing Windows 7 over the copy of Windows 7 that will be installed on SSD from this drive? sheeshI have a hard time explaining stuff sometimes.I am really sorry....been a problem my whole life.Like I said Autism isn't all it's cracked up to be. Wink Thx again for trying to help.I hope I made things a little clearer.

The OS and files on THIS drive(including the drive itself) are going into the old case and I will be using it if the new hardware goes poof or I just want to play some older games that might not run on the new stuff.

I am NOT using Windows XP for anything.I will probably format THAT drive(WD Caviar 120GB)at some point and use it for keeping backup data. That tower is a 2004 Aspire piece o crap server case but,it works.

You can do this if you are using Steam. Get your Windows 7 set up on your ssd including all drivers and programs then you can pull over your game data files. Otherwise you would have to install the games but you could pull over your save games for each game. Hope that makes sense.

Uh....I know you did.....let me explain a little about my particular form of Autism....I sometimes have to have things explained more than once and in different ways to get the memo.No offense taken and none intended for you.I have been dealing with this for 60 years so I am used to it.The rest of the people(you and most others)not so much.I really appreciate the help....FROM EVERYONE! Wink Also I do NOT use my XP operating system anymore. Smile
