How do I change the default location of programs in Windows 10
#1
Hi all,

I've just bought a new pc, and it has the Win10 installed on an SSD drive on C:, and the big HDD drive is on D:

Is there a simple and easy way to make the default install place on the D: drive?

This is my first time using 2 drives.

Also what kind of things do people install to the second drive? I'm assuming games and other programs. But does your browser get installed to the SSD?

Also where do you install the anti virus software? To the SSD or HDD?

Thanks guys

Basically, programs and apps you use frequently, should be on your SSD drive. For example I use iTunes a lot, and that starts up super-fast on SSD compared to a normal HDD. I also have my ant-virus and Malwarebytes on the SSD because the scans are much faster.

Everything else, including photos, music files etc I store on my 'normal' HDD.

It's quite easy to change where Windows installs stuff. you can follow this guide

You may also find this video Usefull to make sure certain settings are adjusted for your SSD drive.

Remember! You should exercise complete CTRL and you ALT to think carefully before you DELete stuff willy nilly.

Would there be any benefit of moving the Temp directory of Windows on to the 2nd drive?

I was reading about Avast and how it seems to write to the temporary windows directory, even if its installed on another drive.

How easy would it be to change the location of the temp directory?

Always install these below on the C: drive.
  • Antivirus software
  • Graphics Driver
  • Motherboard Drivers
  • Firewall and any other type of security program.

I'm waiting for a new usb external hard drive to arrive on monday so I can do a full system image (apparently windows doesnt like backing up to a fat32 formated drive).

Then I'm going to attempt to get windows working again.

Unfortunately the more I read about my issue, and how similar it is to other peoples issues, it seems to have all gone wrong for me when I changed those 2 registry locations in the video.

Some people have even gone further and changed more registry settings, having done it in previous versions of windows.

Since I've changed them I've noticed I now have 2 lots of windows directories on both the C SSD drive and the D HDD drive. The D drive windows directories seem to be newer. I suspect they are from when I attempted to do the big update 1151. I always wondered why I had 2 Windows.old directories, one on each drive. For some reason by changing those registry directories to the other drive, windows seems to be installing on that drive too, but yet for other functions thinks its on C drive. I suspect this is why some of the store apps no longer work.

I did find out that there is an easier way to change locations in windows 10 by going to Settings -> System -> Storage In that menu you can manually go down and change where you want Windows to store files.

So at the moment since making those changes half the working store apps don't work, and I can't activate anything in the store. Windows doesn't seem to recognise the store.

Another problem is that any update that requires a restart fails and reverts back to before the update.

I'm more writing this post as a warning to others that to be careful when making registry changes. This is the first registry change I've ever done and its not worked out well for me.

I plan on doing a system drive image soon. Then uninstalling the ai suite 3 that was giving me usb problems. Then I'm going to change the registry settings back (the only good thing is I only made those 2 changes so hopefully changing them back will work). Then I'm going to re-attempt the update 1151 again. I'm going to do it via the media creation tool. I'm hoping that it will effectively overwrite the current directory mismanagement, otherwise I'm going to have to do a complete re-install of windows. Not something I'm looking forward to having just bought this +£3000 machine.

Its always best to do ProgramFilesDir on a fresh install, changing ProgramFilesDir does not move previous program directory's to new drive.
There is always a risk what making changes like these in registry. You could create a symbolic link.

Sometimes its best left well alone and leave it to people who like to tweak windows.

I think the problems came when I had to do the November update 1151. I ran in to a compatability issue with Asus Suite III. Apparently quite a lot of people have issues with this, especially compatability.

So I ended up rolling things back to the previous build. I think thats when the problems happened.

I'm a bit annoyed that Windows are still releasing Windows CD's with builds prior to 1151. I wonder when they will update their CD's.

As a follow up to this thread.

I ended up making a system image of the C (ssd) drive (I followed Brians video).

I uninstalled asus suite iii, as per the asus forums instructions, i.e. uninstall from programs and features, then boot to safe mode and run as admin the ai3cleaner program.

Then I changed the C paths back in the registry to C. At that point some of the shortcuts broke and curiously the windows search didnt work either.

I then used the media creation tool to update windows to the latest build.

After the update shortcuts were restored, and now the app store is working again.

As for my original issue I noticed an interesting video talking about SymMover, which if you find a program doesnt give you the opportunity to install it on another drive, you can move the directory over and create a symbolic link to the directory in another location. So windows can still point to the C (system drive) but now it'll only store what essentially is a shortcut to another location.

So far I'm having no issues.. fingers crossed!
