As title says, my friend has a PC running Windows 8.1 which came pe-installed from the shop. He has got himself a SSD and we are wondering the best way to install his OS onto new drive. Any suggestions would be great.

If you don't have recovery media nuking that install on the 500gb and then clone that over will be your best bet. You could also order the recovery media from the manufacture unless it was built by a local shop custom.

Raddy so you don't waste that 500gb drive, you can use one of these:
BLACK 2.5" SATA TO USB HARD DRIVE LAPTOP XBOX CADDY HDD CASE ENCLOSURE USB 2.0
Just dump all you data on that so you can save space on your SSD.

Just got Windows 8.1 with retail key, i have downloaded the iso from the microsoft site and burned it to a disc. Now should i install over current os, or format the partitions during the Windows 8.1 install or wipe the whole drive first with Dban.

You should be able to just put the ssd in to the computer and start installing.

Like Don said, if you have a copy of Windows 8.1, take out old drive no need to format it just yet. Place your new SSD into your machine and boot to DVD or USB and install Windows 8.1
