When you plug it in does it make any sound that it has recognized your DVD Drive? please check Device Manager and see if your CD Rom is visible or is the a yellow exclamation mark there for that drive?

Go to Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Computer Management/Storage and see if your cd drive is located there. You may need to change or give it a drive letter.

try this

Once you have connected the DVD player, open the Device manager, right click your laptop's name from the top and select "scan for hardware changes" as shown below

Brian,
I have tried all the suggestions with no luck.
I have even opened cmd / diskpart /list disk. the dvd still wont show. perhaps this dvd player is not compatiable with win10. I'll just have to get a newer on for this laptop.. thanks everyone for your efforts..

I wanted to ask you if the device is displayed in BIOS but nevertheless, just give it one last try. I saw this thread where a user managed to fix the issue with a registry tweak

Please back up your registry first before you make the changes so that if required, it can be restored. To back up the registry, open your registry editor, click "File" from the menu and select "Export". Specify a name for the reg file and save it wherever you like. Look at the pic below

Once you've backed it up, follow the steps below

1. Run the Command Prompt as an Administrator.

2. Copy/type the following and enter

reg.exe add "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Controller0" /f /v EnumDevice1 /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00000001

3. Reboot the system

source: https://www.tenforums.com/drivers-hardware/16301-windows-10-my-dvd-cd-drive-not-recognised-all.html

If it still doesn't work, open your device manager, click "View" from the menu and select "Show hidden devices" as you can see below

Now, see if your device gets displayed under DVD/CD-ROM drives or anywhere else. If yes, right click the device and uninstall it

Once uninstalled, click on "Action" from the menu and select "Scan for hardware changes". Let me know how it turns out
