Hi f23948,

I'm not sure if that Toshiba model has inbuilt diagnostics like what a Dell has but if you check the downloads section on the Toshiba website you should find a utility called 'Toshiba PC Health Monitor', this appears to do a simple test on the hard drive. You may even have this pre-installed on the laptop.

Another utility that you can download to check the SMART status of the hard drive is CrystalDiskInfo
https://crystalmark.info/software/CrystalDiskInfo/index-e.html
This should display the SMART status of the drive.

You can also download Seatools for Windows where you can perform a short and long drive test.
https://www.seagate.com/gb/en/support/downloads/item/seatools-win-master/

Give those a go and let us know how you get on!

You could also use built in windows tool from command prompt as admin. Open cmd as admin and type in chkdsk /p. this will check your drive for errors but not fix them.

On the Toshiba manual I could not find any system diagnostics for boot.

Running the chkdsk command verifies the file system integrity of a volume and fixes logical file system errors. It will give you no indicated if the drive is bad or not, it will report bad sectors at the end of the scan. Running this on a drive which you think is failing could actually push the drive too hard and kill it.

Hard drive regenerator is another great tool that I have had good results from.
