how to move Outlook to new user?
#1
Hello

I seems I may have a corrrupted user profile so am thinking of moving to a new user.

I have seen the britec Youtube video re moving files from the old to the new user but am not clear how to deal with Outlook 2010. My main account is an IMAP account.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Geoff

PS I say may have because I can only get the BBC Store App to download videos when logged on with the new user. The BBC reckon this is because my current user profile is corrupted. It is the latest build of Windows 10.

Hi Geoff, thanks for contacting the forums!
First, you need to first create an outlook data file .pst, which backups all your emails, then after that you can restore it.
To create an Outlook Data file of all your emails for 2010, take a look at this article created by SherWeb:
https://support.sherweb.com/Faqs/Show/how-to-export-an-outlook-2010-pst-file-exchange-2010
Save the file somewhere, where you can access it from your new user

After you have done that. You will need to find out your email server settings. To do this, download Mail PassView from NirSoft: https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/mailpv.html
See the screenshots below on how to use the software:

Once you are at the website, scroll down and click on Download Mail PassView in zip file

After that, click mailpv.zip at the bottom of the screen:

Double click on mailpv.exe

Click on Run

Now you will see the information of your email server settings

Copy and Save the following information:
Server
SMTP Server
Email
Password
Profile

Then log into the new user, open outlook 2010, You want to manually configure the email server settings for IMAP, by choosing addition server types and select internet email after that enter the information you found earlier, then click next to test the settings. If it completed successfully, it will tell you, close out of that message and click finish.

After that look at the following guide created by Microsoft to import the outlook data file you created at the start:
https://support.office.com/en-gb/article/Import-email-contacts-and-calendar-from-an-Outlook-pst-file-431a8e9a-f99f-4d5f-ae48-ded54b3440ac

Let me know if this helps

Thanks

Thanks for your reply REC560.

I had imagined that for the IMAP account I would simply install Outlook 2010 for the new user and then add the details for the server etc (I have a written record of these settings), the emails being on the server and not on my PC. I could then connect and when exiting a pst backup of all my emails would be saved onto my PC. I would not need to import emails from my old user pst file. Have I got this wrong?!

Cheers

If you already have Outlook 2010 set up and running on the old account it should be a simple job just to find and move the existing .pst file over to the new account and point Outlook to it.

Tim

But am I wrong in thinking that for an IMAP account I can simply set up the account details for the new user, server etc and then download all the emails from the server?

You can do yes. Everything should repopulate including the personal files as REC560 was getting at. Are the emails on an Exchange server?

Yes that is what I was getting at Timster. Geoff like Timster said, are you on an exchange server, i.e at work, or are using a free personal one, i.e Outlook, Gmail, Yahoo and etc.

I do not know the actual platform being used - but it is the BTMail server,

mail.btinternet.com

Okay Geoff, thanks for letting me know! Everything should work, just make sure you enter the correct details and your emails, contacts and etc will download.
If you have problems entering your details, here is an article created BT about their email server settings:
https://btbusiness.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/19539/~/setting-up-an-office-365-pop-email-account-in-outlook-2010-%2F-2013

Sorry, wrong link! here is the actual link: https://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/44917/~/what-are-the-settings-for-outgoing-and-incoming-bt-email-servers%3F

Let me know if this helps!

Thanks
