Xvirus Personal Guard 6
#11
Hi Xvirus

Fresh install of Win 10 updated.
I ran a small test on your software using old hardware with 1GB RAM running Win 10 ( the reason for this is I like to see how new software performs on old legacy systems).

I initially ran the Full Scan and when the UI popped up I was surprised to see it stating "Loading Scanner", after 7 minutes the scan began...it was sllloooooww.
I never completed a full scan as after 3 hours of it still scanning the Windows/Services/Packages files I gave up on the scan, I know the initial scan can take time however those files are considered a part of the critical system files of which a scan should burn through as they tend to be signed.

So I went ahead with throwing the Eicar tests at it, the web guard blocked the 2 zipped files and removed them (as it should but failed to see the .txt file and the .com file.

I then moved on to throwing 5 malware samples at the program, all of which were zipped and passworded which it didn't see (no surprise as they are passworded). Upon extraction 2 of the 5 were found before they had a chance to run, the other 3 were allowed to run.

I then ran Win Defender which picked up 1 of the remaining 3 but allowed the final 2.
I moved onto MBAM to try and get the remaining 2 however they too were allowed.

Out of curiosity I ran HerdProtect Portable to see if it would find the remaining 2, of which 1 was found.

The remaining 1 which when analyzed turned out to be malware which embeds itself into the WinPE image (not good).

The interesting thing in all this is not so much the detection rate but the slow scan speed of Xvirus when compared to others.

I decided to see how the "Quick Scan" would work, this took over an hour? Not very quick in my book.
Then the program kept crashing.

In conclusion:

Xvirus has basic potential but needs a lot of work to be a contender or even used as a second opinion when there are so many better alternatives.
Improvements needed in Scan Engine Speed.
UI would be better utilised if written in C++ as it would be lighter on system performance than .Net Framework.
No idea why a scanner would take time to open when the UI is already apparent.
Needs a context menu to allow for individual file scan ( at present you have to select Custom Scan ).
Would like to know what Scan Engines are used for Cloud Analysis.

Verdict:

Has potential but needs a lot of work if it wants to contend with others.

Thanks a lot GuiltySpark for your detailed feedback and time. This helps me a lot really. About what you said:

1)"Improvements needed in Scan Engine Speed."
I am trying to improve this as much as I can. Did you use the lastest version 6.0.5? I made some improvements that made my quick scan finish in 20 minutes, before it was 30 in my computer.

2)UI would be better utilised if written in C++ as it would be lighter on system performance than .Net Framework.
.net framework is really easier to work and mantain than c++ , but I'm working already working in C++ and C for next year's update.

3)No idea why a scanner would take time to open when the UI is already apparent.
While it loads, It is getting all information it needs to scan the files.

4)Needs a context menu to allow for individual file scan ( at present you have to select Custom Scan ).
It already has context menu scanning. You should check if the "Turn on right-click scan" is checked.

5)Would like to know what Scan Engines are used for Cloud Analysis.
Only our engine is available in the cloud analysis, but I am talking to other companies and trying new partnerships.

6)Then the program kept crashing.
Make sure you have the lastest .net framework 4.6.1 and that no other program is blocking Xvirus.

Again thanks a lot for your time. Smile

6.0.5 is being used. Quick scan tried today but 2.5 hours in and it was only half way. It should not take that long to scan system32 catroot files. (Remember this is old hardware).

When you get the C++ version working you should also create a .com version as this would allow for a portable version, something that others don't do anymore. SAS used to have this option but decided to make the free version a .exe, not portable in my opinion more a downloadable for installation.

OK understandable, may wish to state that on website or change from "loading scanner" to "preparing scanner" something along those lines as it's a little more clearer what's happening.

It was already check marked by default, had to uncheck and re-checkmark for it to show up, could just be a glitch on this machine but if it happens to anyone else especially running legacy hardware could be a quick fix.

Good. The more you get the more effective detections will / can be.

4.6.1 already installed. SAS free not running, MBAM free not running, HerdProtect Portable not running and WinDefender turned off.
