How to short stroke my mechanical drive?
#1
Question
Im trying to short stroke my hard drive to achieve better performance but i'm having difficulty figuring out how to use hd tune to configure the perfect tune for my Hard Drive.

Ive read take 15%,20%,25% from the actual volume/Hard drive and whats left is how big your hard drive should be for example 15% of 500GB would be 75GB which would mean my hard drive size would be  425GB left but it seems using hd tune is the the better way to go if you want to achieve better performance but being able to determine how much to take off by using the blue graph line is impossible for me to figure out with all the ups and downs can someone help please?

Short Stroke or Short Stroking your hard disk is nothing new, its been around for a long time and is not necessary now we have SSD.
But to Short Stroke a mechanical drive is still possible, to do this you would need to have unallocated space on the drive...why? because it shortens the amount of work the drive has to do to read data..hence makes it faster. So if you have 200GB drive and only use 70GB and the rest is unallocated space, the arm of the drive does not have to go across the whole platter...which would be 200GB. Windows wont see or read unallocated space. Remember you don't want to create loads of partitions, because these will have to be read.

Hope I explained this OK.

So theres really no method to short stroking besides using like 40gb out of a 500gb hard drive? Lol

Lol. Britec and all the people that can afford high gaming systems already envented that one. Im just curious and intrested in finding tweaks and optimizing hardware and what ever else there is because my machines are low end like for instance some graphics cards have an option in the software for fast read and fast write with a leveler that matches the bus speed theres all kinds of stuff out there that helps the computer feel and make faster and settings like in the graphics cards youd have to turn it on and configure but settings like that need to be used in my opinion and its irritating how theres all these options out there but a beginner user leaves the system as is out of the package for example windows 10 has background apps running and i doubt all of them are being used also theres services that dont need to be run like if you dont have a printer that should be turned off unless you get a printer , same thing with fax also windows search on any pc from xp up what first time windows user is gonna know how to keep it updated ? Windows search isnt needed anyways because you can type stuff in and it still looks for it.

Very True.... The PC I am on now is old, it runs pretty good with Windows 10 for what it is.

Yeah, I would not bother short stroking your hard drive. Buy a cheap SSD.
