Connecting GPU to PCIE x1
#1
Hi to one and all,

I have been looking up on how to connect 2 GPU's to a MoBo but I have only 1 PCIE 16 slot. This is what I found out, you can connect a GPU to a PCIE 1 slot by removing the back plastic stop now a gpu will slot in but just one thing, you do lose on power / data transfer because your gpu is only using 1 pair of data pins insted of 8. I think that's right.? So this is my Q, if you lose out on power / data transfer do you also lose out on performance ?

I ask this because I am trying to do game recording at 60fps the game play's fine but the recording is jumpy and looks like strobe efect and when I change the settings on OBS then the game gose jumpy so I thourght if I put a nother GPU onto the MoBo this my help with fps on games and recording.

My PC is... Asrock H61M-vga 4 Intel i7 3770K (not over clocked) 16GB Hyper X Pro Ram 230GB samsung SSD 2TB WestenDigital black the GPU is EVGA GeForce GT 610 (hoping to be x2)..

All Info wil be helpful and Thank You!!

Hey VamP,

What slot do you have the graphics card installed? The long slot with a tab, or the short slot? I don't know where you heard that you can break a tab off your motherboard in order to make the card fit, that is BS... ((That white tab at the back of the blue PCIE slot is what locks the graphics card in place)) ~ However, you can use a X1 PCIE Expansion Card in a X16 PCIE slot.~

- The 2.0/3.0 16 x PCIE slot "the long slot (Blue)" is the one that you want the graphics card installed. The short slot (White) is your 2.0 x1 PCIE slot...

Hi Larry and ty for reply. My GPU is in the only PCIE x16 slot which is the top slot ( this is a link for the MoBo man https://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/h61m-vg4/ ).

I have seen on youtub this is just one at random https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZed5r9tXHQ So by removing the end tab you can run a x16 card in a x1 slot. Some MoBo's all ready have the slot open some dont . The slot I am looking at is the white bottem slot shown in the manual link.

I do know that I can get a x1 to x16 addaptore which is the way I may go but by adding a GPU to this x1 slot will the GPU's lose performance??

BIG TY

ok this is your motherboard correct H61M-VG4 ? so you want to add a video to  PCI Express 3.0 x16 slot blue correct ?

what you want to do is to remove the tab on the  PCI Express 3.0 x16 slot

you don't want to remove that tab its use for holding the video card in place

Yes that is the motherboard but do you see the white PCIE x1 slot that is the slot that I am thinking of using to put the second gpu in and NOT the x16 blue slot. The blue slot all ready has a geforce gt 610 in it.
Would this work? the net say's yes but would I lose performance on that GPU in x1 slot or would I lose perfomance on both gpu's??

sorry just seen that the slot on the board is a white PCIE x2

no it will not fit
the video card need a PCI Express x2.0 slot
your motherboard have a PCIe 2.0 x1 slot which is much smaller

If the motherboard was made to support a Dual Graphics card configuration, it would have 2 X16 slots.

What I would do instead of risking damage to your motherboard, is downloading MSI Afterburner and try tweaking the settings on your GPU. Or use a motherboard that supports a Dual Graphics Card configuration.

The video you posted: His channels are a very good source of information, but he is also known to do some Mad Scientist things to hardware "just to see if it works" he even states that in the video. That was a LAN card, not a Graphics card.

As far as using a X1 to X16 adapter, I cannot comment on because I have never used one... I don't think the single power lane would provide enough for what you need.

What issues may occur if you modify your board:

- Driver issues.
- No power to GPU cooling fan.
- No power to the GPU.
- Very low power throughout the whole card.

MSI Afterburner Download: works with any brand of GPU

Edit : Scroll all the way down and read the reviews of this adapter from Startek:

you would be modifying the motherboard at end of the day PCIe 2.0 x1 was not manufacturer to fit a PCI Express x2.0 slot video

If you somehow get another graphics card to work in that pci-e 1.0 slot and you want to pair the two cards your primary video card will be reduced to pci-e 1.0 speeds. Certainly not worth even trying. This would be the case even if you use a pci-e X 16 adapter.
