That’s an idea which I like.... so if I put in an ssd @ 256...... I’d be good to go ? I’d then have bit of contingency... I’m using my iPad at the mom., which is a pain in so many ways.... ok I suppose for mail and browsing.... Linux is guess is “straightforward” to install..... ?

Thanks for the suggestions.... About a 100 years I was more technically competent....this is pre window NT 3.1

My favourite has always been XP pro. .... unbelievably stable....

The talk of Linux took me on another journey.... I found this article....

https://www.pcworld.com/article/2147063/linux-to-the-rescue-how-ubuntu-can-help-a-computer-in-distress.html

It was a faff finding Ubuntu 12.04 (I know there are newer versions) and creating a boot disc on a usb stick....eventually I got there.

So what did I find ? Nothing with the Word “Windows”.......but I did find a directory with a lot of my files. I copied lots across to usb drive, and put them on my old netbook which runs XP.

It’s not the perfect solution; there are files I can see in Linux and open....but when I copy them across to the Windows environment they won’t open, or are corrupt. I don’t understand why they open correctly in Linux but not in Windows,, makes no sense to me.

Another issue : moving folders and different windows around in Linux is painfully slow...don’t know why that is.....either

I’ve found no trace of the Windows System files via the Linux environment....I’m certain they are there, it seems like some sort of perverse hide and seek game...

BB

Ps as you will have guessed I have no Linux knowledge....well .001%

Yes... I’ve managed to get all the data off the d:/ partition.....

I switched to Ubuntu 16.04.... a much newer version than the one I was using earlier.....and its much quicker by a country mile. A bit to move files around and onto my USB. Drive.....than before....

So where does this leave me ?

1 ... I still can’t access the Windows 8.1 system files...or even see them... I think the c:/ partition is locked and I have no idea what to do about that. Any suggestion someone.? I did read something about mounting / unmounting drives...it all seemed a bit complicated to me,.....
I want to try and rescue all my bookmarks....and a bunch of music files...

2. Where do I find My documents....My images and so on.... I’m thinking they are saved to the D:/ partition by maybe not.... . Perhaps they are saved to System File area on the C:/partion... Any thoughts ..?
