Upgrading a laptop or buying a new laptop?

Pros and cons of upgrading a laptop or buying a new laptop?

I always go by this:

  1. How old is the Laptop?
  2. How much did they pay?
  3. Whats the condition like?
  4. What do they use it for?
  5. Is it Budget, Mid range, High End Laptop?
  6. Heavy user or light user?
  7. Whats there budget?
Answering these I could then give them proper advise to what to do.

Example: Sometimes a SSD or Ram upgrade or both is enough for some people.

Good advice Britec, I had a classic example of a customer wanting their old laptop o be upgraded with an SSD to make it quicker and bring it up to date from Windows Vista to Windows 10 until I gave them the quote and they told me to forget it they could buy a new laptop for that money, which is true but there are pros and cons wouldn't you agree? A laptop from PC World isn't exactly brand new when its bloated with pre-installed software PC World was paid to install on their computer to sell etc, plus It isn't exactly up to date with the latest windows updates when you buy it. At least if you upgraded an old laptop in some cases it could still end up faster than a new laptop with a 1tb hard drive for e.g. Their hard drive in the machine was over 8 years old (With Vista on it) and I tried to tell them that its bound to fail soon as mechanical drives are very lucky to see that amount of years and If you were to buy a copy of Win 10 from Amazon it alone costs round about £100 but they expected the whole upgrade etc to be done for that money. No matter how much I tried to explain they were having none of it, hence why I suggested a video for you to educate others more on that topic Smile

Ajaay27 don't want you to take this the wrong  I have to agree  with customer putting more money into the laptop

which is  8 years is not the best way to go upgrading the SSD is one thing but you have to look at CPU and memory speed

which given the age of laptop windows 10 will not run very well

what you can do is call up the customer  and say hey MR small when you get that new laptop if you still would like to upgrade to an SSD then call me up

Sorry, Compton, I forgot to state that the laptop itself wasn't that old, someone else just put in a much older hard drive when the computer needed a repair in the past. Sorry, I forgot to clarify on that.

No point buying a high end laptop unless someone is a gamer or use it for video editing. I think if you just surf the web, chat on skype and send email, then buy a budget laptop and when something goes badly wrong like motherboard, buy a new one.

Just a suggestion...

Some people tend to get attached to their Laptop/Desktop PC's and will pay for upgrades. In a case where someone would rather buy a new Laptop/Desktop, offer to transfer data from old PC and install a clean installation of Windows. "New Computer, No Bloatware, and they have all their data"

I have a Toshiba Satellite L450-136 that I recently upgraded with an SSD drive and after watching the video about upgrading the Fujitsu CPU it got me wondering about
my old Toshiba which I have been told numerous times can't be upgraded in terms of RAM.  Is this entirely true or are there any upgrades that can be done with this old bit of kit?  I was thinking about selling it or even finding a use for it and sadly I can't.

Any hints out there?

That is a very old laptop, but the socket looks like you can change CPU Smile I think the chip in the laptop is Celeron 900 or its the AMD Sempron

Here is a list for socket p.

What CPU does it have?
