Windows 10 screen rotating screen and icon size
#1
Question
HI
Had a phone call this evening from an elderly friend who had fallen asleep at his laptop when he woke up the screen was rotated vertically and the desktop icons were very large and not all showing on the screen.

I tried suggesting pressing the Ctrl+Alt+Up arrow keys to straighten the display and press and keep holding the CTRL and the mouse wheel to adjust the is icon size.

this didn't seem to work so I suggested trying to start team viewer so I could have a look what was happening

it took a long time to get team viewer to work and eventually it worked Somehow.

when I had control of the machine I tried the Ctrl+Alt+Up arrow keys to straighten the display this didn't work

so I tried right clicking on the desktop to bring up graphics options or graphics properties when I clicked on either of these it would not open and came up with an error message about not having permissions or something like that?

it wouldn't open the settings or programme menu when I tried to click on the windows button so I couldn't try anything like a system restore or repair.

I'm thinking maybe the windows installation is damaged somehow .

has anyone got any suggestions I can try remotely as I don't live near my friend?

thanks,
oliver

run a Sfc scan tell us what it finds

Perform SFC scan

Click 'Start' > Type cmd in the search field > Right-click the command prompt at the top of the list and select 'Run as Administrator'
Inside the command prompt, type sfc /scannow > Press 'Enter'

The start button is not working will try Win + R key in the morning and see if that works

Please post the results of the SFC scan and also, create a new user account and see if the issue occurs there

Select Start  > Settings  > System > Display, and choose a screen orientation from the drop-down list labelled Orientation

sorry for not replying sooner I have been busy

Thanks everyone for the suggestions so far .

the start menu is not working on the laptop so I can't rotate the screen that way .

my friend is going to send the laptop to me later this week to have a look at in-person rather than over team viewer . my friend is elderly and gets confused with computers so I think it will make more sense when I have it in front of me.

the sfc /scannow found nothing had to run it from task manager .

Just right click on the desktop and select Display Settings and change it from there.

the right click was not working . not a lot was working when I examined the laptop remotely via TeamViewer . please see the attached image of the screen as it was

but well it seems some very strange things happen to old peoples laptops when they fall asleep on the keyboard   Smile

when I received the laptop by courier and unpacked it I turned it on it was working normally apart from the icons being very large soon fixed that

no screen rotation and the start menu was working properly.  it wasn't like that when I examined the laptop remotely via TeamViewer

I have given the laptop a full Malwarebytes scan and ran SFC scannow both showed nothing wrong with it

I have installed the April windows update no problems

the only thing wrong with the laptop now is maybe its a bit slow. it seems to have lots of processes running.

is anything I can do about this?

I think it's better you start a new thread because we have some overlapping with rotating screen and icon size

and it's a bit slow

so guess the problem solved we can close this thread
