Registry tweaks - Risky?

So I have been watching a lot of videos on YouTube lately about registry tweaks, and I was wondering if anybody here would be able to provide any information about this. I would like to tweak the registry on my computer to make it run faster, improving graphics and I would like to change the windows logo to my own custom logo. Is doing this taking a big risk for someone who has never done this before? What are the pros and cons of doing this? I have been into the registry with regedit a number of times, and honestly I find the registry to be quite intimidating in a weird sort of way, probably due to the fact that I know if I mess anything up there it's game over for my computer, and I guess all those words in all caps too.

So is there anybody who will be able to tell me more about making tweaks to the registry? I would really appreciate any advice you can provide.

this is my take on registry tweaks today hardware is pretty good and very fast

doing registry tweaks will not make much difference

Correct. Windows 10 takes 20% of the bandwidth by default settings. If you have Windows 10 Pro.  type the Windows icon + R  (opens up a run box) type in the run box..   gpedit.msc (hit enter) navigate to Local Adnimistative templates/Network/Qos packet schedular...   look for (on the right)  "limit reservable bandwidth". (double click it) Change the bandwidth limit % to zero.  Click "enabled" Click "OK"  this will stop windows 10 from limiting your bandwidth limiting percentage from 20% (by default) to Zero.(this is the best setting)

The next bit of advice I would give is to download TCP Optimizer.....(this program must be run as administrator to work) ask forum members for the settings. I can give you gamer settings, if you ask.
Other tweaks I know are changing your DNS to the fastest detected by the program i will, at the end, mention... (click on nameservers) Run a benchmark. They are listed from fastest to slowest, from starting at number 1 on down, pick the first two or three, (depending on router..some use 2,some use 3)and learn how to change dns. Go into your routers settings and change the DNS to the order listed in this program

Brian may know of how to do the same thing on Windows 10 home, in the registry-- (bandwidth limitation wise)....I do not.

If your running Windows 10 and have a SSD in your computer, I would say doing registry tweak would make a tiny difference and maybe no difference. 

Things that make computers faster.

1. Overclocking CPU, GPU and Ram.
2. Upgrading to SSD, nvme etc etc.
3. Disabling some services and features etc etc will make a little difference 
4. A fresh install will make a difference for a while
   

If there was a massive difference to be made with registry tweaks Microsoft would be using them already.

Yeah that's true, everything is so fast now so it's probably not worth doing. I thought that maybe I could shorten the time it takes to boot up but my computer already boots up pretty quick and I wouldn't want to risk messing anything up. Now that I think about it I don't know much about the registry so it's probably a good idea for me to stay away from it.

Thanks, I followed your instructions and managed to do it without breaking my computer, surprisingly. I'll check out TCP Optimiser, my computer is very bad at running certain games, and for things like livestreaming and recording (particularly using OBS Studio) the graphics card doesn't seem to like that much, or maybe the CPU is being over-used.

Overclocking the CPU might be a good option, but 'm not sure how to do that, and I have heard that doing so can be risky. I don't want to overclock it too much. I think that an SSD would definitely be a good idea, as I keep having to uninstall applications and deleting old videos and stuff to install new applications, which is not at all practical.

personally i like create restore point or backup registry first before making changes to the registry

well if the hard drive is running out of space that can cause data loss & damage the hard drive

sound like if you need a system upgrade start a new thread post system specs

Wine32priorityseperation=26 and largesystemcache=1

LargeSystemCache when set to 1 opens up a larger cache and win32priorityseperation will tell largesystemcache to cache background or foreground.

DisablePagingExecutive=1
Ntfsmemoryusage=2

And if you use the win32priorityseperation and largesystemcache tweak mentioned above id also disable prefetcher and superfetcher

Make sure to do research on those mentioned above and also make a backup of your system incase things go wrong and moving your temp files to a different directory maybe a ramdisk if you have enough ram and dont do gaming and also disable services will help also.


Anything i mentioned is what worked for me at times also anything you try from above is at your own risk and i will not be held reliable
