Registry Backup and Restore Options
#1
I have become aware of various available options for backing up and restoring the Registry. I am wondering if one can mix/match the various options (e.g. backup from option 1 and use option 2 to restore). Also is one method preferred technically over the others.
The options that I am referring to are:
1. Manual process: Use RegEdit and use File - Export to backup; then Navigate to RegBackup Folder right click appropriate backup and select Merge.
2. UVK - Ultra Virus Killer Utility
3. Tweaking - All-In-One-Repair Utility
4. Tweaking_Registry_Backup Utility: Uses Shadow Copies.

The main question I have; can you use the Shadow Copies method for backup and another method for Restore? Also if you have to use a Rescue Disk for a non-booting computer, does it matter if the Registry Backup used Shadow Copies or one of the other methods?

You can use Tweaking - All-In-One-Repair Utility in a Live CD and point to the backup folder.

That's something I have never tried, although I would assume it would be difficult given third party programs may require a slightly different data compression to save (if at all) but I couldn't give you a definitive answer one way or the other.

Sounds like a job for you to test the theory and come back and let us know Wink
Remembering to make a full image backup first of course.

GuiltySpark, thanks for the reply, also thanks to Britec. I have taken your advice and have set up a test machine to perform the test. The machine is an old Dell 32-bit, 1 gig machine which I have loaded Windows 10 Preview Build on. The Windows 10 Preview Build is the operating system.

Bottom line is you can mix and match with no problems.

Test scenario is:
1. I consider this computer a "junk" computer that I only use for testing. If it goes, so be it. Thus no full backup.
2. Created a System Restore Checkpoint prior to testing.
3. Performed two Registry Backups using the following
a. Tweaking All-In-One Repair
b. Tweaking_Registry_Backup (uses Shadow Copies)
4. First restore:
a. Used Tweaking Repair All-In-One Restore via The Registry_Backup
b. Performed computer restart
c. Tested Internet via I.E., executed Command Prompt(ipconfig /all), Tested Task Manager
d. Everything worked properly - thus I am concluding a successful test.
5. Second restore:
a. Used Tweaking_Registry_Backup Restore via the Tweaking Repair All-In-One backup.
b. Performed computer restart
c. Again tested internet via I.E., executed Command Prompt(ipconfig /all), tested Task Manager
d. Everything again worked properly - thus I am again concluding a successful test.

If anyone sees a flaw in the above, or disagrees with my conclusions please let me know.

Oh, I see what you mean now. I thought you were referring to using two completely different third party programs.
