CCleaner Registry Cleaner Questions
#1
Through various posts, plus the videos from Britec, the use of Registry Cleaners has not been recommended. I am wondering how safe the Monitors and/or Administrators of this forum believe the Registry Cleaner within CCleaner is? I have used it many times on my own computers plus the computers of customers while performing a computer tuneup with no ill affects. I have found it to be so safe that I wonder if a Registry Backup is necessary. I know the previous statement is not sound, but am looking for advice from someone more familiar and more technical than I am on the process.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Hi Chuck

I use CCleaner quite a bit when necessary and have had to use the Reg cleaner part of it for various reasons. It is one of (if not) the safest out there.
If I'm working on my own machines I never bother with the reg backup, if its a customers machine then backups are vital as you never know what kind of 'tweaking' has been done to it.
It's always good practice though to select the backup option if anything, just for peace of mind. However, I have never as yet had a bad experience with the Reg Cleaner part although its not advisable to use it on the same machine constantly (like everyday) purely for conflict reasons that could potentially become.

Backing up the registry is just another option to fall back on if your computer goes pear shaped, backup, backup, backup the golden rule of computers. example you rely on system restore point as to roll computer back if it goes wrong, but now malware has corrupted you system restore points or deleted them and your registry has major corruption. If you had other backups like registry backup, system backup, clone backup you would be OK. I see so many people rely on the hidden partition recovery as there safety net, but they go wrong from time to time.

So you can never have to many ways to backup your system or data.

Now I am not a big fan of registry cleaners, because they can do damage to a registry and big part of registry cleaners sales pitch is to post loads of web pages on how it can fix registry errors, clean out malware, you name it they claim it. Regcure was one of these and there is many more.

The trouble is people run them all the time and that's when things can go wrong, so if its not broke, leave well alone.

CCleaner does minor registry clean so I would stick with that if you insist on cleaning your registry.
