Slow Booting Computer
#11
Thanks GuiltySpark,

I'll most likely never put the OS on a 3TB HDD but your information on the GPT/MBR thing is very handy to know as I don't think many people know this. I did Google repair GPT and got some very strange answers...well to me anyway.

It's been a few days now and the computer (Windows 7) boots in about 98 seconds... is the normal ?

Slightly off topic I read somewhere Microsoft introduced secure Boot to Windows 8 to protect the MBR but who's going to protect the MBR from Microsoft updates. Sad

Secure Boot was a good idea to block malware and rootkit, but turn out to be a nightmare for a lot of people.

Turned computer on this morning...212 seconds to boot and three more boots were about the same.

I did what I wanted to do then turned off the computer...when I turned it back on about half hour later as the four colours met I got the blue screen of death and a notice saying..."windows was unable to start because of recent hardware of software changes" etc etc etc.

This happened every time I started the computer...so I took out the Hard Drive put in the clone and the computer booted strait away with no blue screen either. Looks like a Hard Drive problem...went out and bought a new one then cloned the clone to the new HDD.

Replaced the clone with new HDD and computer boots to desktop in 81 seconds...so hopefully the problem is now fixed.
The old HDD was a western Digital about 3.5 years old...there were no warnings or strange sounds only a slow startup for about 4 weeks.

Glad I had a cloned HDD in the cupboard otherwise I would have been stuffed...I remember asking some time ago if an image was better then a clone...well I can say now the clone wins hands down. I'm going to re-clone the old HDD and see if the problem returns just to be sure.

Keep us informed Bill, might be a good idea to test that old drive with Western Digital Life Guard

First thank you Brian for the HDD test tool...does it work with Seagate HDDs too ?

I wiped the problem HDD with Diskpart then recloned it...HDD booted in 109 seconds and no blue screen.

I then ran Western Digital DLGDIAG - Extended Test which ran for 1hr-30mins...got Test Completed Successfully - Pass.

I don't know what has happened...this problem HDD was cloned about 6 weeks ago and the clone is fine...so from then to now somethings gone wrong...I keep thinking maybe Microsoft updates have somehow corrupted the OS.

I'm running the problem HDD now and over several hours I've done 5 restarts...56 secs/ 96/ 58/ 97 and 60 seconds...so I'll leave this HDD in for a few days and see what happens...I still have a new Seagate HDD in reserve just in case.

Just one more thing...has anybody else had this problem and what did you do to fix it ?

In 2011 when I bought this HDD it was $45 ...about 24 English pounds...Today the same HDD cost $65...about 38 English pounds...inflation I doubt that very much.
