Abnormal PC shut down
#1
Hello Smile

I'm trying to install Windows 7 onto a PC. When the PC restarts, it completely shuts down, and then boots up. This prevents Windows from being installed. I did a BIOS update with no avail. Any ideas?!

Dell Studio XPS 8000

Thanks, Anthony

Hi SenzaDubbio, Welcome to the forum.

  1. What are you using to install Windows (example: CD, USB, Upgrading, Recovery Partition, Recovery CD, or Genuine Windows CD)
  2. Did the Computer originally have Windows 7.
  3. Have you installed Windows before?

The restart is part of the installation process anyway as it needs to be written to the HDD it also needs to create and write an MBR, the restart is merely a part of the setup to install (so called) Dynamic files = .dll(s) and to check the bootloader works correctly.

Is there a particular error message you are getting?

Thank you for all your contributions to YouTube over the years. I'm a computer tech. I can't find the sign up rules to see if you allow that or not.

In case you do, because I am stumped on this, the issue is with how the PC restarts. It's almost as if it shuts down completely. It even resets my KVM switch.

To answer your questions: I'm using a CD for installation; it originally had 7; yes I have installed Windows before.

Some things to try
  • Could be corrupt media
  • Check hard drive to see if its bad
  • Check in your BIOS to see if  it's using AHCI or IDE mode.
