sorry for my delay in responding as there was not delay in your helpo as I was up to my neck with issues.
Thanks Compton I had already downloaded rufus but had not used it at the time.
and thanks Britec.
I know they postings were quite old and it this was not the video i had been watching.
So I used Rufus to boot & install XP Home edition. So it was one old dell laptop i go is up and running a treat. It's grateful owner could ill afford to buy a new laptop as he needs it for other things and is one happy chappy. may be my time was worth more than the laptop but as he now says he cannot keep up with it is so fast ahahh.
so thanks guys.
I had my own Windows 7 probs as appeared my hard drive was failing but lesson learned as I purchased a cheap 2nd had one and not only did it not turn out to be a drive problem in the end but in fact a cable problem.
So lesson learnt.
