Computer is unable to Shut down
#1
Good day Group Members,

I'm currently looking for assistance with my recently built computer (5 months old pc). I'm not to sure if it is a hardware or a software related issue. Currently my desktop computer that is running windows 8.1 is unable to shut down. Every time I try to shut down my computer it always restarts instead. To turn off my computer I have to manually hold down the power button and wait until it shut down and sometimes when I try to put on back the computer it does not want to turn on.

I was wondering if there are any changes I need to make on the Motherboard ASUS P8Z77-V.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Probably a bios setting. Some have wake on lan etc enabled. Other things to try are resetting cmos battery and disconnecting power supply for a bit then re- connecting.

Can you do an sfc /scannow as admin for me from cmd. There also could be problems with your system files.

Another thing to do is check your system event logs.

if you go into the control panel, then power options on the left side in power options it says choose what power button does, click on that and you can change it to when i press power button shut down, that may at least save you having to hold the button in, also just a thought with pressing the button and holding it to switch off its not sticking or got damaged by chance, I am heavy handed its something i would do more that likely good luck

It sounds like the computer might be blue screening just before it shutdowns. Easiest way to find out is to enable the advanced boot options https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgSnMdFSlZw and once this is enabled you will need to restart the computer. As soon as the computer restarts start tapping F8 (you don't want to miss it) once the Asus board asks what device you want to boot to (select the HDD you normally use) keep tapping the F8 key until the advanced boot options comes up.

Once it comes up select the 'Disable automatic restart on system failure' and you should boot into windows. Once you have booted into windows shutdown the computer and if a blue screen happens it will hang around so you can see what is going on.

At the bottom of the blue screen it will say "Stop: 0x00..." tell us what that says... IF it blue screens.

Also do a double check on the wiring of your power button to the main board. I've had that issue before because I put the wrong wire in the wrong place.
