I have a 7yo Toshiba Satellite A300 and when I connect it to my LED TV via HDMI, or place it on a wooden surface it crushes or restarts randomly. When I have it on its Logitech base, it works normally. I should note that I changed its battery as its original got old and stopped working. But I don't think it is the battery because the problems with HDMI and wooden surfaces do not go away if don't have the battery on. I also cleaned it inside and changed the thermal paste twice and I try to keep its fan clean of dust. I don't know what to do.

Intel Core 2 Duo
4 GB RAM
250 GB HDD
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 series
Win 7 Pro

OK I will try it, but I don't work with Linux, even though I would like to. I will format it during the summer probably and see then

did the problem start after you open up the laptop to clean inside and changed the thermal paste or before ?

I assume the Logitech Base you speak of is a cooling pad? Download and run Speccy and monitor your temps when the computer is off of your Logitech Base. I know you said you replaced the thermal paste but still would like to rule out overheating. Record the temps just before system crash.

Compton, I don't think so because I cleaned the laptop for the first time not the previous December, the one before, without problems. I noticed these problems during this year's Christmas holidays and then I cleaned it the second time but the problem continued.

And Timster the Logitech base does not have cooling fans. Guys I am an Electrical and Computer engineer, so don't ask the obvious. (My base is Logitch Alto Cordless https://support.logitech.com/en_us/product/alto-cordless) But, as far a cooling base goes, I used the basic one of my brother's and I still get the problems.

Wow! That seemed a bit rude. Remember you are asking for FREE help here.

From your first post I could of also assumed that the logitech base you speak of might of been a cooling pad.
(Looks like the pad raises the laptop which would increase the airflow around the laptop)

I would do what Timster said and actually find out what the temps are.

the reason why I asked to boot linux so we can rule out windows as the problem

and the reason why Timster asked you to check your temperature is to make

sure you don,t have a overheating problem

Guys, I am really sorry if my response appeared rude; it was not by any means my intention. I don't want us to get on wrong foot here. I just stated my qualifications to tell you that I am not a beginner and basically you are my last resort because I tried everything else and the web doesn't say anything on the subject.

Most probably the base keeps a good flow of air, but when I made another attempt to connect the laptop with the TV, whilst on the base, the laptop crushed again. You should note, that all this crushing also happens when I take the battery off the laptop and it is working only with the charger. Sadly, since I am not working with Linux (even though I would very much like to) I cannot make the comparison between it and Windows. I tried the specific monitor and the temp values were well withing the range of 35 to 65 deg C. But I will try it again.
