Hardware memory tester is the way to go but they are a lot of money, hot swapping is by far the quested and easiest way to test for bad memory.
I have seen intermittent memory issues when Memtest 86 and Memtest86+ fail to detect bad memory on 1 to 3 passes, you really need to do 8 passes to sure the memory is not bad.
Unless the memory is so bad that Memtest detects it as soon as you run a scan then you could be in for a time-consuming task with memtest.
I find swap out with known good memory and running a full on burning test does the trick any type of burning test will push memory into failure. Also check logs and BSOD files for signs of bad memory. It's better to do that then wait 24 to 48 hours for memtest to run its scans.
Hardware memory testers like these can tell if you have bad memory in seconds

you can also get slot testers that work well
