Please back up your registry first before you make the changes so that if required, it can be restored. To back up the registry, open your registry editor, click "File" from the menu and select "Export". Specify a name for the reg file and save it wherever you like. Look at the pic below
Once you've backed it up, follow the steps below
1. Run the Command Prompt as an Administrator.
2. Copy/type the following and enter
reg.exe add "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Controller0" /f /v EnumDevice1 /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00000001
3. Reboot the system

If it still doesn't work, open your device manager, click "View" from the menu and select "Show hidden devices" as you can see below
Now, see if your device gets displayed under DVD/CD-ROM drives or anywhere else. If yes, right click the device and uninstall it
Once uninstalled, click on "Action" from the menu and select "Scan for hardware changes". Let me know how it turns out
oh my,
that is so beyond me, but thanks so much for taking the trouble you have taken trying to help/
I'll bite the bullet and buy a newer dvd player
thanks dsldg2
