Please back up your registry first before you make the changes so that if required, it can be restored. To back up the registry, open your registry editor, click "File" from the menu and select "Export". Specify a name for the reg file and save it wherever you like. Look at the pic below

Once you've backed it up, follow the steps below

1. Run the Command Prompt as an Administrator.

2. Copy/type the following and enter

reg.exe add "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Controller0" /f /v EnumDevice1 /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00000001

3. Reboot the system

If it still doesn't work, open your device manager, click "View" from the menu and select "Show hidden devices" as you can see below

Now, see if your device gets displayed under DVD/CD-ROM drives or anywhere else. If yes, right click the device and uninstall it

Once uninstalled, click on "Action" from the menu and select "Scan for hardware changes". Let me know how it turns out

oh my,
that is so beyond me, but thanks so much for taking the trouble you have taken trying to help/
I'll bite the bullet and buy a newer dvd player
thanks dsldg2

dose it show up in Device manager

Hi Compton,
I have had some very good answers to my problem,to everyone who tried to help has my best wishes.
I seem to have stumbled on the answer by mistake... lol.. that' me.
I plugged my dvd burner/ player into a powered usb 3 hub, then connected the hub to my laptop......
and there is was showing in "this PC" and it now plays dvd movies just fine. I think my player needed the extra power, I know it's not a perfect fix, ie it must have power for the hub, but it will do for me.
I would like to thank all of you, who answered but short of answering all I would be thankful if you can pass on my thanks..

That is nice to hear and a little unexpected too because devices like DVD players and external hard disks are usually known to draw less power from ports in a USB hub than they would if connected directly to the inbuilt USB ports

I am curious to know if you connected the hub to the same USB port where the player was directly connected earlier or if you connected the hub to another port

Partha,
yes I did connect the hub to the same usb 3 port on my Toshiba laptop.
I did try all 3 ports on the laptop before using the hub though, my Toshiba laptop has only 3 usb ports
and they are all usb 3. I also tried a small un-powered hub first, but that did not work either .
The Toshiba laptop is windows 10, and the Samsung DVD player/writer is one I use on my Dell computer usually, which is windows 7. and the player connects by it's 2 usb leads into the Dell laptop with no trouble. and works fine.
I really want to thank you for the help and effort you put into my problem. thanks again..dsldg2(Brian)
