Dell Inspiron 530 Replacement PSU
#11
Hi Guys,

Re: My Replacement Power Supply Question.

OK I know where I was going wrong with my original enquiry.

It would appear that virtually any ATX supply would have been acceptable
just so long as the wattage and plug-up were suitable.

Never having changed a supply before, I thought they would be manufactured
specifically for specific machines but I now know that is not the case
and a generic one would be OK.

When I first started to research my requirements I was taken in by the photos
of the supplys and really didn't think to wonder why they were nearly always
shown upside down with the fan pointing upwards. I thought that would cause a
problem with the airflow so discounted them. I now know better but they had
me going for a while there. I was looking for one with a fan at the back. Doh!
I was misled good and proper.

I have now ordered a supply even though my current one has started to behave itself.

Thanks for all your help.

Most modern power supplies will work with fan facing up or down.

Hi there as you have an old PC I would get a 300 W PSU. Depends on the motherboard if you have an 24 pin or something different. If I was you

I would get this https://www.amazon.co.uk/ACE-400W-12cm-24-Pin-Model/dp/B00647L7H8/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1476805651&sr=8-2&keywords=400+w+psu

Or this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Generic-Power-Supply-RJDR3-Inspiron/dp/B00MVWYAK6/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1476201223&sr=1-1&keywords=Dell+Inspiron+530+power+supply

Now this will depend on your PC case. The old computers sometimes cant fit the new power supply's in so be careful and double check to make sure. If you want over a 400 w PSU I would get a better PC case so it can be fitted ok. More power is better but keep in mide if your PC does not need that much don't get one. But yes if I was you I would get a PC case and a 400 w SPU or higher to be on the safe side.

PC case: https://www.amazon.co.uk/ZALMAN-Z11-HF1-M-ATX-Computer/dp/B00CJZWQMY/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1476805917&sr=1-1&keywords=zalman+pc+case

One more thing if I was you I would also upgrade the motherboard and the CPU. But if you want just the 300 w PSU do it and hope every thing works. But if the PC still having problems I would get a new PC or even what I said and consider getting a new motherboard, CPU, Graphics card, Ram and also a PSU and a new PC case.

opps just noticed your problem was fixed. But yes if the fan was pointing down words that can block airflow. But if your PC starts dying again get a new one or build one.

Thank you for reading,
